Øystein Karlsen to adapt ‘The Whitstable Pearl Mystery’ novels

Acorn TV’s Acorn Media Enterprises, an AMC Networks company, has commissioned Buccaneer Media to produce a new British crime drama based on the The Whitstable Pearl Mystery novels by Julie Wassmer.

The six-part series Whitstable Pearl will be adapted by Øystein Karlsen. Kerry Godliman, the star of Ricky Gervais’ Netflix comedy After Life, has signed on to headline the show.

The series follows big-hearted local restaurant owner Pearl Nolan who sets up a local detective agency after undergoing police training in an earlier career. She is soon embroiled in her first case when she discovers the body of close friend, Vinnie. Pearl forms an unlikely partnership with DCI Mike McGuire, a new local police chief who has transferred from London to escape his past. And when a second body shows up, Pearl finds herself pulled into the dark underbelly of the picturesque town she calls home.

Whitstable Pearl will stream across North America, New Zealand, Australia, and the UK in 2021.

Trailer for ‘Top Dog’

Top Dog the TV series is based on bestselling Swedish author Jens Lapidus’s books The VIP Room, Stockholm Delete and Top Dog.

Top Dog is directed by Alexis Almström and Molly Hartleb. The script is written by lead screenwriter Veronica Zacco together with others.

The anticipated thriller series will premiere October 7 on C More.

The weekly Swedish bestseller lists

Hans Rosenfeldt’s When Crying Wolf grabs the No. 2 spot on the official Swedish bestseller list for hardcovers this week. The just published title also features on the audio list, where it comes in at No. 5. Jo Nesbø’s The Kingdom claims the No. 3 spot in the same category.

Another newcomer is Kristina Ohlsson’s children’s horror title, The Haunted Mansion’s Secret, which debuts at No. 3 on the children’s list. The paperback list meanwhile sees Niklas Natt och Dag’s long-running bestseller 1794 land at No. 4.

‘The Explorers’ Club and the Snow Thrower Duel’ published in Norway

In the US, Fredrik Backman’s Anxious People is No. 1 on the Washington Post hardcover bestseller list for week 39.

‘For the Dead’ longlisted for the MIMI Award

Lina Bengtsdotter’s For the Dead is officially longlisted for the MIMI Award – the German booksellers’ crime fiction prize. A jury of booksellers has selected 30 titles to be featured on the long list, and from September until the middle of December fans can vote for a nominee. Ten titles then continue to the short list, and in the second round, from the middle of December till the end of January, readers are again able to vote for their one favorite title to win the award.

‘The Walking Dead: World Beyond’ to premiere on AMC and Amazon Prime UK

The spin-off series The Walking Dead: World Beyond expands the universe of The Walking Dead, delving into new mythology in a storyline that follows the first generation raised in a surviving civilization of the post-apocalyptic world. Two sisters along with two friends leave a place of safety and comfort to brave dangers, known and unknown, living and undead on an important quest.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond was co-created by The Walking Dead universe producer Scott Gimple and The Walking Dead writer Matthew Negrete, who also serves as showrunner. Magnus Martens is the director of the first two episodes.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond will premiere October 4 on AMC in the US and on Amazon Prime UK the following day.
