Lukkertid Shutter Speed
Stand-alone Fiction #
An ordinary Tuesday in June, time stops for humanity. Children stop growing, no babies are born, and no one ages or dies. Nature, however, continues to follow its course. Night turns into day, plants grow, and animals live like before.
We follow six people during a few intense summer weeks. For the critically ill Jenny, time’s cessation means her salvation. For Jakob, who is expecting a child, it’s a brutal obstacle. For the new couple Ellen and Philip, it changes everything. Desperation rises: What can be done for time to return to normal?
Shutter Speed is a thought-provoking and engaging story about having an endless amount of time at your disposal. A multi-layered story that explores our relationship with our own bodies, with time, and with death’s inexorable nature.

“In the end it’s the character portrayals that capture you. You enjoy their company, especially in the portrayal of parents and children. When Lunde writes about how it feels to embrace the scrawny body of a child or stroking a soft cheek, she takes you there with her. When that is intertwined with grief over children’s development coming to a halt, that they are not learning anything now that time has stopped, great prose arises.”

“Maja Lunde delivers razor-sharp portrayals of people in crisis. /…/ This is a unique novel unlike most things I have read. Not only does she hold a high literary level, she can also capture something universal. /…/ It is impossible not to be impressed by this novel: the quality of the prose, the story, and the message that Lunde manages to discreetly sneak into each and every chapter.”
-
“This is a page-turner, and so heartbreaking that I don’t have the words for it. /…/ It is hard not to let oneself be enthused by this unusual story.”
-
“A dystopian story with emotional depth.”
-
“A fascinating thought experiment that long lingers in the mind.”
-
“A book that is pleasantly uncomfortable.”
-
“A great novel about life in the here and now and our relationship to nature.”
-
“Profound and highly unique!”
-
“Maja Lunde very cleverly translates the theme into literature by not engaging in grand philosophical reflections, but rather in the way of very concretely describing the effects of immortality on the lives of individuals. /…/ A very complex, multi-voiced, well-composed novel.”
-
“Bestselling author Maja Lunde makes time stand still in her new novel, and I likewise completely forgot about the time while reading, so much did I want to know what was going on. /…/ A mystery that is endlessly captivating.”
-
“With warmth and sensitivity, Maja Lunde tells a story about mortality, the present moment, and our connection to nature.”
-

-
“A poignant novel about life and its finiteness.”
-

“Maja Lunde (…) is an extremely skilled author. She has a fantastic ability to almost photographically (…) portray everyday life. Apart from others with the same competence, you don’t get even a sense that she picks out the right components. Instead, you are drawn into the illusion that everything is there, that everything is portrayed. For a Scandinavian reader (…) this is highly effective, the closest resemblance is being inside a high-quality dollhouse with working electricity and tiny, tiny eggs in a tiny, tiny basket, tiny, tiny plates on a tiny, tiny table. It is FUN to read when you are so totally immersed.”
