Blå The End of the Ocean

The Climate Quartet #2

  1. Signe is almost 70 years old but will not let herself be intimidated by the ocean. Alone, she sets off in a sailboat from her childhood village in western Norway, to confront the man she once loved. It is just her, the boat, and its strange cargo.
  2. David feels too young to be a father; nevertheless, he is alone with his daughter. The two are fleeing through a drought-stricken southern Europe, where there’s no longer enough water to supply everyone. Everything changes the day they discover an abandoned sailboat, stranded far from the shore.
  3. The End of the Ocean is the second installment in the Climate Quartet. It is a novel about humanity’s and nature’s vulnerability, and the struggle for the most basic yet vital thing there is: water.

Reviews

  • “Two stories on the impact of climate change intersect in this thoughtful and suspenseful novel. /…/ Both halves of the story are convincingly detailed and quietly wrenching, and Lunde gradually and subtly draws them together to powerful effect.”

    Kirkus Review *Starred review*, US

  • “As the water crisis gets worse, the desperation echoes the extremities of Emily St. John Mandel’s postapocalyptic Station Eleven (2014). In a gripping narrative, Lunde portrays the profit-motivated decisions that created and are now exacerbating David’s horrific existence. This is another brilliant call to arms from a vital contemporary novelist.”

    ALA Booklist, US

  • “With small means Lunde achieves a simple, but well-executed reflection: the local cause that Signe is fighting an uphill battle for, gets different proportions in the future – it becomes something global that everyone is burdened by and suffering from. And through this clever dramaturgical device, the novel insists on the climate political necessity: to understand the local as something global, a pedagogical point that becomes neither too vague nor overly clear.”

    Expressen, Sweden

  • “It is refreshing to find a book like The End of the Ocean amongst the cultural offerings of today. (…) Maja Lunde aspires to something with her novel, she has a distinct political message and in addition to that she writes exceptionally well. /…/  [T]he story is beautifully written and told. Norwegian author Maja Lunde writes with conciseness and precision, instantly cutting straight to heart of the matter – and to the reader’s heart. And regardless of whether one agrees or disagrees with Maja Lunde’s views on climate change, The End of the Ocean compels the reader to consider their own position.”

But not only the most beautiful; it also shows a vast ability to turn a mountain, a glacier, a river, into something deeply touching, to write human beings into nature and turn them both into one unit. /…/ The most vivid thing in this novel is big, true, and angry in a way that you can’t help but love.”
