Actor Arvin Kananian grew up in Stockholm, Sweden and in Yokohama, Japan. In his late teenage years he moved to the UK to study law, but instead found his calling for acting and began studying Sanford Meisner and Lee Strasberg’s methods at acting schools in London and Stockholm. Kananian quickly made a name for himself in the Swedish film and TV business, starring in numerous hit series and feature films.
2018 saw the premiere of Aniara wherein Kananian played the role of Chefone. Aniara received fantastic reviews and was a great festival success, winning among else ‘Best Direction’ at the Guldbagge Awards and the Cineuropa Award at Les Arcs European Film Festival. In 2020, Kananian starred in the acclaimed and daring TV series Caliphate as chief of police Nadir. Caliphate immediately generated a lot of buzz and was a big hit among critics and viewers alike.
Kananian starred in Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness (2022) which was awarded the prestigious Palme d’Or in Cannes.
In 2026 Kananian received a Guldbagge Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the acclaimed Egghead Republic (2025), the latest feature from Swedish directorial duo Pella Kågerman and Hugo Lilja.
In the upcoming SVT drama thriller series Hundarna, based on an original idea by author Jens Lapidus, Kananian plays the lead role of Sasha.

The Series Mania festival has unveiled an exciting slate of international TV series for its 2026 edition, running from March 20–27 in Lille.
Jag for ner till bror (My Brother), written by Karin Arrhenius and based on Karin Smirnoff’s acclaimed novel of the same name, will compete in the International Competition section.
Hundarna (Burden of Justice), based on an original idea by author Jens Lapidus and starring Arvin Kananian, has been selected for the International Panorama section.
Happiness Season 2, written by Yashar Alishenas, will compete in the Short Forms Competition.
Hundarna is based on an original idea by author Jens Lapidus and follows two friends who run a successful law firm together. The lead roles, Sasha and Kalle, are played by Arvin Kananian and Björn Bengtsson.
The series will premiere on SVT Play on February 20.
Today, the nominations for the 61st Guldbagge Awards were unveiled.
Andreas Öhman received a nomination for Best Director for his celebrated rom-com Sju steg, which also secured a nomination in the Best Film category.
Ella Rae Rappaport was nominated for Best Actress for her leading role in the chaotic science-fiction film Egghead Republic, which is also nominated for Best Film. Arvin Kananian earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the same film.
The awards will be presented at the Guldbagge Awards gala at Cirkus in Stockholm on January 19, 2026.
Hugo Lilja och Pella Kågerman’s Swedish sci-fi feature Egghead Republic emerged as the winner of the Peroni Audience Award 2025 among the 135 films shown at the festival.
TV4 Rising Star nominee Ella Rae Rappaport plays the young club girl and aspiring illustrator Sonja, who’s hired by the hyped magazine Kalamazoo Herald to investigate rumors about centaurs in a futuristic, nuclear bombed Kazakhstan. The cast also includes Tyler Labine and Arvin Kananian.
On September 26, the new horror-drama Färjan (Blood Cruise), adapted from Mats Strandberg’s novel, premiered its first two episodes on SVT Play to strong reviews.
The six-episode series plunges viewers into a terrifying voyage aboard the Baltic ferry Baltic Charisma. Two vampires, mother Edith and her son Walter, board in disguise, and when communication with the outside world is abruptly severed, the ship becomes a floating nightmare. Passengers must face suspicion, violence, and the creeping dread that no one can be trusted.
Thirteen-year-old Kolbjörn Skarsgård makes his debut in a leading role as the vampire Walter. He shares the screen with a strong ensemble cast, including Tuppence Middleton, Björn Bengtsson, Jessica Grabowsky, Marika Lagercrantz, Arvin Kananian, and Johan Ehn.
Färjan is directed by Jonas Alexander Arnby, and the screenplay is written by Strandberg together with Malin Lagerlöf.
The action-thriller Stolen Girl, directed by James Kent, is inspired by true events and follows the harrowing journey of a mother whose young daughter is abducted and taken overseas by her estranged ex-husband.
Kate Beckinsale plays Maureen Danning, a woman who spends years searching for her daughter, Amina, before teaming up with a specialist in child retrieval. Their mission leads them into dangerous territory in the Middle East, raising both moral and legal dilemmas as Maureen edges closer to a long-awaited reunion.
The film also stars Scott Eastwood, Matt Craven, Ana Golja, and Arvin Kananian.

Friday December 6 saw the premiere of Jönssonligan kommer tillbaka in Swedish cinemas. The heist comedy has received great reviews, many of them praising the film for bringing the old and beloved characters into a new contemporary context.
Eddie Åhgren is directing the film with a stellar cast including Robert Gustafsson, Jonas Karlsson, Anders Jansson, Jennie Silfverhjelm, Arvin Kananian and Johan Rabaeus.
A new Jönssonligan film is currently shooting and FLX and SF Studios can now reveal the star-studded cast.
This Jönssonligan reboot is going to take us back to the soul of the classic film series whilst being placed in a contemporary context. Eddie Åhgren directs from a script written by Per Gavatin. In the beginning of the film, we meet Sickan who has been on the run for a year. He reunites with Vanheden, Harry and Doris for another coup.
Robert Gustafsson plays Charles-Ingvar “Sickan” Jönsson, and Jonas Karlsson, Jennie Silfverhjelm and Anders Jansson will portray Vanheden, Doris and Dynamit-Harry. The cast also includes Arvin Kananian, Lotta Tejle, Thomas Bo Larsen, Johan Rabaeus, David Batra, Felicia Danielsson, Alfred Svensson and David Ritschard.
Jönssonligan will premiere in Swedish theatres Christmas 2024.
Milad Alami’s film Opponent is selected as Sweden’s submission for the Best International Feature Film Academy Award.
Opponent – which had its world premiere at the Berlinale earlier this year, and has been screened at more than 30 festivals – stars Payman Maadi, Ardalan Esmaili, Björn Elgerd and Arvin Kananian.
