Snøsøsteren

Snøsøsteren The Snow Sister

The Seasonal Quartet #1

Christmas Eve is just around the corner, which happens to be the same day as Julian turns 10 years old. It’s normally the best day of the year when the Christmas tree is filled with ornaments and lights, the air carries a scent of tangerines and gingerbread, and a fire crackles in the fireplace. But this year, nothing feels the same. Julian and his family are grieving the loss of his big sister, Juni, and Julian’s parents seem to have forgotten that Christmas is even on its way.

Then he meets Hedvig, a girl who loves Christmas as much he does. The two quickly become friends, but Julian senses that something isn’t quite right. Why is Hedvig always home alone? Who is the mysterious man sneaking around Hedvig’s garden? And why does it seem impossible to teach her how to swim?

Maja Lunde has masterfully created an atmospheric, gripping story about Christmas longing and hope in the vein of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and the stories of H.C. Andersen, brought to life by Lisa Aisato’s magical illustrations.

Reviews

  • “A grand Chrismas tale about sorrow, longing, smiles, and happiness.”

    Aftenposten, Norway

  • “The Snow Sister – an outstanding Christmas story. A new classic of Norwegian Christmas literature has arrived. […] Maja Lunde’s story is beautiful and inspiring, and Lisa Aisato’s illustrations are in a league of their own. Aisato is already well-known for being a formidable illustrator, but here she surpasses herself with images full of emotion, wonder and physical details that sparkle with Christmas spirit. […] Maja Lunde does an excellent job of untangling the story’s complications, evoking laughter, shudders and tears along the way until everything is finally resolved in this literary miracle of a book. This book is about more than Christmas. It’s about friendship, sibling love, coming together as a family and accepting the mercilessness of death that threatens every happiness. All this is woven into a fable that shines with a willingness to let life emerge victorious. A new classic of Norwegian Christmas literature has arrived.”

    ★★★★★★

    Dagbladet, Norway

  • “Maja Lunde writes using a light, conversational style, which is pleasant to read – the words simply slide past, and it is difficult to stick to the advent calendar rations of just one chapter a day. Lunde is also excellent at providing linguistic imagery that cheers the reader, such as feeling so excited that it’s if one’s heart is on ice skates. […] Aisato has a warm, fantastical and nostalgic style, which is perfect for Christmas.  […] the most moving I’ve ever read, and are guaranteed to make readers cry. […] The Snow Sister is an investment in Christmas joy for many years to come.”

    ★★★★★★

    Verdens Gang, Norway

  • “It’s a challenging story to put into words, but Maja Lunde does it brilliantly, evoking laughter, moments of fright, and tears along the way. Because it’s about more than just Christmas.”

    Bokiño, Sweden
