Wintermans Mysterier

Wintermans Mysterier The Winterman Files

This is the tale of private detective Moses Winterman and his humble little agency tucked away at the bottom of a closed down furrier’s shop. What begins as a series of routine cases soon unravels into deeply buried family secrets, stretching across continents and generations. Along the way, Winterman navigates fleeting romance, mouthwatering meals, far too many late-night drinks, and ongoing battles of will with his eccentric landlady, Clotilde Nothnagel. Told in three interconnected parts—these are The Winterman Files.

#1 What the Blind Man Saw
From the silent waters of the Opica River, a safe is pulled up. When it’s found to contain a human head, questions arise. But the investigation stalls, and the case is never solved. The only person who claims to have seen anything is a blind poet, who bears witness in forgotten poems.

#2 A Calm Storm
In a letter to a friend, businessman Sokolov Sidler confides that he fears for his life. If he ever disappears, he writes, his wife must be thoroughly investigated. A few days later, Sidler vanishes at sea, and the police believe he was swept away by the wind, but was it even windy that day?

#3 The Lively Little Fellow
Among the university staff members, Paul Molard’s distinctive look ensures he’s never mistaken for anyone else. One day, he discovers that someone is impersonating him, and behaving appallingly. Someone wants to harm Molard, to disgrace him. He cannot understand who, or why.

“K. Svensson drives drunk over the templates of the modern crime novel, intoxicated by the joy of storytelling and a genuine love for the detectives of the golden age. He does it all with a smile that’s infectious from the very first page.”

Reviews

  • The Winterman Files is a highly unconventional detective story set in a fictional country. The language is rich, and the style is humorous with a touch of the burlesque. The joy of storytelling is unmistakable.”

  • “No one else has written anything quite like [The Winterman Files] it’s something as rare as genuinely original, marking [K. Svensson’s] debut in the suspense genre. /…/ I don’t think I’ve ever been so astonished after reading a text before, so it surely deserves some kind of award. /…/ There is a vibrant, imaginative boundlessness that surges through the story. In one of the most absurd tales, the Polish biologist Rudolf Weigl and his wife Zofia make an appearance, among others. Remarkably, the story is almost entirely true, as are several others. The author has an impressive talent for uncovering obscure historical events. It is a wondrous and original work, at times fantastically funny, and a liberating, unapologetic expansion of the genre.”

  • The Winterman Files is at times very funny, with lines like: Clotilde looked at the poetry collection like a monkey looks at a violin. /…/ There is a literary playfulness /…/ The pace is fast, and the threads many.”
